2020 financial results are a mixed bag for MPL insurers

In this article, we review key financial results for 2020 for the medical professional liability (MPL) market. The article appeared in second quarter issue of Inside Medical Liability, a publication of the Medical Professional Liability Association. The data derive from a composite of 54 of the largest specialty writers of MPL coverage. We discuss how the market faces uncertainty, with insurers facing a multitude of risks. Using statutory data obtained from S&P Global Market Intelligence, we have compiled financial metrics for the industry based on:
- Written premium
- Overall operating results
- Reserve releases
- Capitalization
- Policyholder dividends
